DAY 3

JACOBA SUMMERS

“You like this one, baby?”

Blu eyed the green pajama set with his forehead creased. That meant no, he didn’t like it.

“Yeah, it’s cool, sweetheart. Whatever you wanna wear is cool with me.”

Smiling, I picked up both of our sizes, glad that they actually carried a size Blu could fit. Our color was green, and this set was the only one that still had his size.

“I think this one looks better than the one over there that had the white Santa Clauses on it.”

His face balled up.

“Exactly. At least this one just has ornaments all over it.”

One of the things I wanted to do this Christmas was take intimate pictures with just me and Blu. We’d already had our family portraits done, and they were beautiful. These pictures would be taken to add to the wall in our bedroom.

While our color was green, blue went to Tiffany and King, and red went to Gianna and Grey. I couldn’t wait to see the outcome of the pictures. The photographer we’d hired was the best in the area, and I had no doubts that he would kill it.

After leaving the mall, we went on a quick grocery store run. The ladies and I made sure to stock up the last time we went. However, with these three behemoths eating fifteen times a day, we were already out of a few things.

We were in and out of the store in less than an hour. Snow had already started falling, and according to the forecast, it was supposed to get heavier as the evening progressed.

“I’m finna fall out with Colorado,” King mumbled.

Five pairs of eyes turned his way. Blu, who was driving, chuckled.

“I told you it takes a lil’ getting used to.”

“Hell, nah, bruh. I just saw a sign that said beware of mountain lions. And why the fuck they got these nets on the sides of the damn mountains like this?”

King’s concern drew laughter from us all. He’d been to Colorado before. Obviously, he hadn’t paid attention to anything outside of Tiffany and their child.

“Babe, those signs have always been there.”

“Fuck that,” he drawled. “I was probably sleep or somethin’. This is why I stay my black ass in Florida. Ain’t no fuckin’ way I’m sleepin’ peacefully knowin’ wildlife is just a few feet away.”

The interior of the Suburban roared with laughter. My brother-in-law was a mess. Instead of making the situation better, Grey had to go and make things worse.

“Those nets keep the rocks and boulders from fallin’ on the passin’ traffic.”

As Blu sped up the highway, the Suburban remained eerily quiet.

“I know you fuckin’ lyin’,” King responded after he processed what Grey said. Once again, the Suburban erupted in laughter.

I loved my people.
